The GYROTONIC® Method is an original and unique movement method that addresses the entire person by opening energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, increasing range of motion, and improving strength and movement efficiency.

With Gyrotonic exercises, each movement flows into the next, allowing the joints to move through a natural range of motion without jarring or compression. These carefully crafted sequences create balance, efficiency, strength and flexibility.Within the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® there are two distinct methods of practice: the GYROTONIC® Method and the GYROKINESIS® Method.

What is Gyrotonic?

Gyrotonic is a movement system with specialized machinery, as Juliu Horvath likes to call, “the instruments”.
I say that this is a movement system that allows the body to fully express itself, for every joint to elongate, to open, to expand, and for the rest of the body to be in a supportive environment for that to take place.

What’s making the Gyrotonic equipment totally unique is the full spectrum of environments that it’s possible to train the body in. It really can accommodate anybody in any field, in any walk of life.

The idea with Gyrotonic is to create space throughout your entire body so we have Pulley Tower. It supports your body so that you can then reach into space to much greater degrees than you ever could without that support. You can then strengthen your movement, not a muscle, but your body’s ability to move
holistically. And then, for instance, here with a Leg Extension Unit, we have resistance. And it’s very sophisticated resistance. We have springs and weights that we’re working with at the same time to give a different kind of buoyancy, a different quality, which is much more human actually.

Then we have a Jumping Stretching Board. This is a sliding environment. It’s completely different from a resistance environment or just a supportive environment. This is an unstable environment, so the way your nervous system has to respond is completely different.

One of the machines that is very unique as far as working with a huge range of possible mobilities is the GYROTONER, where you can do all of the handle exercises and all of the spinal motion work in a completely
global way. And then beyond this, we have the the Archway, which is using your body weight against gravity to really develop a deep, deep internal power. This is the only machine where there’s no moving parts, so you become the moving part in the Archway.

If you really want to build awareness through movement, being able to put yourself in all of these different environments and all of these different positions in these different environments, then you really train into your nervous system what it is to have command over your body and harmonious participation with your body and movement.
