What is Gyrotonic method?

The Gyrotonic method is an original and unique movement method that addresses the entire person, opening energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, increasing range of motion, and improving strength and movement efficiency. … Now known as The Gyrotonic Method, it was brought to the United States in the early 1980s. Gyrotonic is a unique system of exercise that incorporates movement principles from yoga, dance, gymnastics, swimming and t’ai chi. Central to this is the Gyrotonic Expansion System, or GXS, a rather complex-looking device specially designed with rotational discs and weighted pulleys. Usually made as part of a wooden frame, this set up allows the exerciser to strengthen their muscles via a specific exercise incorporating circular and spiraling movement patterns. It is these that are said to increase joint mobility, particularly in the spine. It’s also known to help a multitude of lower back or cervical spine pain such as sciatica, repetitive strain injury, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

It works by simultaneously stretching and strengthening the body, increasing range of motion, correcting posture and developing coordination. Used as part of a regular exercise regime and it’s known to give users a stronger spine, improved posture, and bone density, strengthen joints, increase mobility, and balance neuro-muscular coordination.

Is Gyrotonic better than Pilates?

Pilates is more linear or 2 dimensional. Gyrotonic requires more control through a larger range of motion. Pilates requires more focused control. Gyrotonic is unique for its circling, spiraling and undulating motion patterns which help strengthen all of the body’s internal support structures.

What is the difference between Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis?

Gyrotonic classes are conducted as private sessions or in a small group class. The Gyrokinesis Method is practiced on a mat and chair, without equipment. Without the feedback and guidance of the equipment, participants in a Gyrokinesis class are more dependent on their own proprioception to explore movement sequences.
